The smoke test is great! I'd love the ability to run tests via pytest, which I think we can do with a fixture (but maybe the development experience will be too slow if it takes too long to resolve the connection.

The primary motivator for the pytest experience here is that it integrates nicely into IDEs and may be easier to onboard new developers since pytest is widely used.
